Must-Have Updo Tools:

The first step to mastering quick and easy updos for work or school is to have the right tools on hand:

  • Dry shampoo
  • Rattail comb
  • Teasing comb
  • Hair brush
  • Elastics or hair ties
  • Hair spray
  • Bobby pins

Easy Updo #1: Upside Down Braided Bun

The upside-down braid bun looks far more complicated and intricate than it actually is, which is a win-win considering it is simple and easy to achieve. Here’s a video tutorial to check out with the written instructions below.

Spray some dry shampoo all over to add some grip and texture. Next, flip your hair upside down and, beginning at the nape of your neck, create an upside French braid, stopping once you get to the top of your head. Secure the braid with an elastic or hair tie. Alternatively, if you find it too difficult to do a French braid, take out a section of hair on a bottom back corner of your head and create a regular braid (clipping away the rest of your hair).

Combine the rest of your hair with the braid and twist together to form a high bun. Secure the updo with a few bobby pins and add some hairspray for hold. That’s it! Once you get the hang of braiding upside down, this look will become a go-to.

Optional style boost: As you’re braiding, attach a few hair rings on the pleats of the braid to add an unexpected pop of shine.

Easy Updo #2: Gibson Tuck

The Gibson tuck looks ultra feminine and romantic, but can be casual enough to wear every day for work or school.

First apply a texturizing spray or dry shampoo and create a middle part. Starting with one side, take a small section of hair at the top at your part and start twisting the section, adding more hair to it as you move down your hairline to the nape of your neck. Secure with a clip for now. Do the same thing to the other side and once you’ve reached the nape, remove the clip and bring both sides together. Secure the two sides and the rest of your hair into a ponytail with a hair tie.

Part the hair that is just above where the hair tie sits and twist the ponytail on your fingers. Roll the ponytail towards your head, tucking the ends into the part and continuing to roll and tuck the ponytail into that area against your head. The idea is to create a “roll” with your ponytail that looks like the continuation of the twisted sides. Secure with bobby pins and hairspray.

Easy Updo #3: Low Bun with Ribbon Headband

This look is very simple and sophisticated. It doesn’t take many steps and can be put together in five minutes flat.

Create a low bun to your liking, centering the bun at the nape of your neck. You can create a low pony and simply twist the hair into a bun or braid the pony and wrap that into a bun. Secure with bobby pins.

Take a ribbon and place it on your head where a head band would go, tying it underneath your bun at the nape.

That’s it! The ribbon headband takes an otherwise simple low bun up a notch with a touch of color and class.

Easy Updo #4: Easy Chignon with Braided Wrapped Ends

This is another style that is super simple but looks intricate and complex. You’ll be getting loads of compliments and it will have taken you only about ten minutes!

Start by applying some sort of texturizing and volumizing product to prevent slippage. Bring all your hair to the back and gather it in a low ponytail. Grab a ponytail holder and on the last wrap-around, don’t pull the pony all the way through, pulling out only a small amount to create a small bun with the long ends left out.

Gather the long ends and create your favorite braid, either a three-strand braid or a fishtail work well. Braid all the way down to the ends and secure with an elastic. Wrap the braid clockwise across the bun, securing it with bobby pins underneath.

The tutorial for this style begins at approximately the 3:45 minute mark of this video.

Easy Updo #5: Simple Double Bun

Why throw together a messy top knot when you can create a classier style with two buns?

Using a simple twisted bun style, create two buns on top of your head on either side and gently pull them a part to add volume. Alternatively, split all of your hair into two horizontal sections, ear to ear. Starting with either the top or bottom section, twist your hair into a bun at the back of your head and secure with bobby pins. Create the other bun directly on top of or beneath the first bun to create two stacked buns. The result looks similar to a French twist without all the work!
