Hair extensions can be great for adding volume and length to your hair. Although we seek professionals to install our extensions, most of us remove them on our own, which can lead to major hair loss if done incorrectly. This article discusses how to properly remove hair extensions for each category.
This method may be the easiest way to install hair extensionsbut you should still be careful when removing. First, part your hair into sections. Be sure to detangle as you part, making sure that each section exposes the clip-ins. Then, with your hair in one hand, raise the clips and gently slide them out. Take your time with this and be careful not to pull too hard.
Glue-In
Removing these can be tricky so if you do not feel comfortable doing it by yourself, we recommend that you go to a professional salon. The removal method for glue-in extensions is the same for removing tape-in hair extensions. The best way to take these out, is to use a hair glue remover. You have to first, part your hair into sections to reveal the wefts. Next, apply the remover directly onto the scalp and rub the glue onto the hair with your fingers, until the bonds loosen. Another alternative is to use natural oils (such as olive, jojoba, coconut, etc.) for the extraction of glue-in hair extensions.
Sew-In
This method is installed by using cornrow braids and thread. Therefore, the concept behind removing this type of hair extension is simple; cut the thread and unravel the braids. However,
while this may sound simple, the actual process can get tricky. To extract this type of extension, you need to part your hair into detangled sections to expose the thread. Then using a scissor (or another sharp object), carefully cut the thread so that the bonds begin to unravel. Next, you must discard the extensions and the remains of the thread. After you complete this step, proceed to take apart the cornrows. The best way to prevent losing hair, is to take your time and do this in bright light.
Brazilian Knots
Also known as fusion extensions, this method is perhaps the most complex to install and remove. The installation process requires knotting mixed with glue and high heat. There are several ways to go about doing this at home, but I will explain the two most simple and cost-saving methods. You can use natural oils to remove these extensions, the same way you would remove glue-in bonds. Always be sure to part your hair into detangled sections first. Another great way to remove fusion extensions, is to use a conditioner. We recommend using one that is free of sulfates. If you select this method, you will need to wet your hair first before placing a shower cap over it. Let it stand for 30 minutes before rinsing and combing out the glue. If there is still some glue left, repeat the steps until your hair is free of glue.
