Remove Your Clip in Hair Extensions in 6 Easy Steps

Clip in hair extensions are among the easiest hair extensions to remove but even though that’s the case there is a right way and a wrong way to remove them. If you remove them the wrong way you could risk damaging your own hair. If you remove them the right way your hair will remain in great condition for years to come. Follow these 6 easy steps to remove your clip in hair extensions to make sure your hair and your clip in extensions remain in the best possible condition each and every time you wear them.

Step 1

Make sure your hair is tangle free

If your hair is matted, tangled or stiff from the addition of products like holding sprays or gels take a little time to make sure all of the tangles are removed and your own hair is soft before attempting to remove your clip in hair extensions. Use a detangling product or spray your own hair and the clip in hair extensions with a fine mist of water and work your way through your hair with your fingers with a brush or a large toothed comb to remove clumps of holding products and to smooth out tangled areas of your hair.

Step 2

Section your hair

Create a part just above where you’ve installed your clip in hair extensions to reveal the area where they are attached to your hair. If you’d like, you can also create a part in your own hair just below where your clip in hair extensions are attached to make removing them even easier.

Step 3

Remove your clip in hair extensions

Use one hand to secure your own hair as you gently lift and slide your clip in hair extensions out of your hair.

Step 4

Detangle your clip in hair extensions

After sliding your clip in hair extensions out of your hair inspect them to make sure they are free of knots and tangles. Use a comb, brush or your fingers and the hair product of your choice if necessary to remove any knots that may have formed in your extensions.

Step 5

Dry your clip in hair extensions

If your clip in extensions are damp from the detangling process dry them with a hair dryer or give them time to air dry.

Step 6

Store your clip in hair extensions

Now that you’ve removed and detangled your clip in hair extensions you can store them until you’re ready to use them again. Clip in hair extensions are best stored in a cool, dry place where they will not be exposed to direct sunlight which may cause the color to fade or become lighter over time. Place your clip in hair extensions back in their original packaging to make sure they will retain their original appearance or put them in a box long and wide enough to accommodate the entire length of your clip in hair extensions.
