Clip in and halo extensions do not need to be washed as often as your natural hair because they are temporary extensions that are only for wear during the day/night and not in bed. The halo should only be washed when you feel it is really necessary and has either lots of product build up or feels/looks dirty. The clip in extensions should generally be washed about once a month for the same reasons. You will notice the hair becomes harder to style when it has lots of product build up so this is a good time to wash it.
Permanent extensions such as tape ins, wefts and I-tips can be washed just like your own hair. However, washing them too frequently will dry them out so we recommend washing them every few days maximum. The less you wash them the healthier they will remain for longer. Dry shampoo is great for hair extensions and also adds volume so this is a go-to for ABH babes!
All of our hair extensions are 100% human remy hair which means that the cuticles are still intact and the hair all ones in one direction, which prevents tangling and looks smoother. This means that your ABH hair extensions can be styled and washed just like your natural hair. However, just like your natural hair the more you style your hair the more you will damage it. Heating tools are particularly damaging for all hair so try and keep the use of heating tools to a minimum and always use a heat protector. Use products that are alcohol and sulfate free and super moisturizing. By investing in high quality products you will really get better wear from your new hair.
Don’t brush your extensions when they are wet as they are more prone to breakage, try and wait until they are at least 90% dry and brush them gently starting from the bottom using a wide toothed comb, soft bristle brush or loop extension brush. If you have clip-ins or the halo hair extensions then always remove them before bed or they will get damaged and the clips will damage your own hair. For permanent extensions clip your hair back or braid it before bed to prevent tangling. Basically, just remember that the better care you take of your extensions the longer that they will last.
Storing your temporary hair extensions properly is very important if you want them to look their best for as long as possible. For clip-in extensions be sure to remove every single weft before bed and always comb them gently from the bottom to the top, removing all tangles. Once you have removed them and brushed them, store them safely in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. This is very important as sunlight and heat will damage the hair and dry it out.
Your halo hair extensions should also be removed every day before bedtime. Just like the clip in extensions, you will want to brush them gently but thoroughly after you have removed it. The halo headpiece can be hung on clips to avoid tangling or stored nicely in a box in a cool dry place. Again, be sure to keep it away from direct sunlight and damp as this will only damage the hair and shorten its life.
If you have temporary extensions such as the halo hair extensions or clip ins extensions then no, do not sleep wearing your hair extensions. They will become tangled, matted and may damage your natural hair. Remove them, brush them gently and store in a cool dry place.
When you sleep wearing your permanent hair extensions you will want to secure them so that they do not become tangled. Braiding your hair before bed is a great way to prevent tangling and maintain your waves! Otherwise twisting in a top knot, or wearing a scarf are other effective ways to take care of your hair.
All of our ABH hair is 100% human Remy Hair that has been carefully treated and colored for you. Bleach is a damaging chemical for hair that we strongly advise against using on your extensions. Your extensions will arrive beautifully healthy and shiny if you bleach them the hair’s integrity will be damaged and you will notice immediately that the quality of the hair will not be the same. Also, once hair has been colored already, there is no guarantee of how it will take to the bleach and the color may be very different from what you are expecting.
Try to match your color as best possible so that you do not need to bleach your hair. Ask your hairstylist for their opinion before ordering as they will have experience selecting hair extension colors for their clients.
You will want your Amazing Beauty Hair extensions to last for as long as possible. To do this there are certain products that should be avoided because they will damage the hair leaving it dry and frizzy. Avoid all hair products that contain sulfate and alcohol and any products that have the following on the ingredients list SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Alcohol denat, Ethanol, SD alcohol 40, Propanol, Isopropyl, and Propyl. You can check for these ingredients by simply turning over the bottle! These are all baddies for the hair as they will literally strip your hair of it’s natural oils, so your hair will dry out super fast. Look for sulfate free and alcohol free products, they may cost a little extra but in the long run they will save you money because your lovely ABH extensions are going to last that much longer.
Sticky Products should also be avoided as much as possible. Products such as gels, waxes and heavy oils will clog up your extensions so you will need to wash them more frequently. You really only want to wash your permanent extensions every few days to keep them healthy. Also, even when using these heavy styling products on your natural hair, they will transfer onto your extensions. Your extensions already look super glossy and shiny when they arrive so there shouldn’t be much need to use a lot of products anyway. When it comes to hairspray, look for lightweight formulas that won’t drag your hair down.
It depends on what type of hair extensions that you have if you can swim or play sports in them. If you have clip in extensions or the halo hair then no, try and either remove these before the pool or sports or tie them up/clip them back so they do not get wet. If you have permanent extensions then we still suggest that you try your best not to get them wet. Unfortunately, they are simply just more prone to tangling when they are wet so it can be a lengthy process to untangle them without a conditioner on hand!
Also, saltwater and chlorine are not good for our natural hair or for extensions. The chemicals in chlorine can strip the hair of its natural oils and also cause discolorations. Blonde hair extensions can turn green and nobody wants that to happen! If getting your hair wet is unavoidable then braid it or tie it back to minimize tangling. Rinse your hair as soon as possible to remove any chlorine and saltwater, then use a good shampoo and lots of conditioners to ease the tangles.
You can certainly play sports wearing permanent hair extensions. Our tape ins extensions, wefts, and tips stay secure after application so we will not move or fall out during your workouts. However, you may still wish to tie your hair back to avoid tangling.
There are some great, simple ways to prevent your hair extensions from tangling and shedding:
1 Brush your hair regularly using a loop hair extensions brush, wide tooth comb or soft bristle brush. These are all great for hair extensions as they gently tease out the tangles, are super gentle and will minimise breakage.
2 Keep it moisturized. Dry hair tangles way more easily and when it is dry and damaged it will shed. Using products that are specially formulated for dry and damaged hair will add moisture. Doing a weekly deep conditioning treatment or mask is a great way to take care of your hair and add moisture to keep it healthy.
3 Use a heat protector. Every time you blow dry or use heat tools on your hair use a heat protector to minimize damage. Try not to brush your hair until it is at least 90% dry as the hair is very prone to breakage when it is wet and brushing it when wet will simply cause it to snap and tangle.
4 Store your halo extensoins or clip in extensions neatly. By always removing these and gently combing them to remove tangles before bed will help them to last for longer. Brushing them daily prevents tangles from building up to a point where they become knots and shed.
5 Do not swim with your hair extensions. Swimming with hair extensions can cause a LOT of tangling. Remove your hair extensions if they are temporary, or tie them up if they are permanent. If you absolutely must swim with them, then rinse them thoroughly afterward and use lots of conditioners.
All of our extensions at ABH are made from 100% human Remy hair which means that it still has the cuticle intact and all of the hair runs in one direction. This means that the hair is smooth, will tangle less than non Remy hair and you can treat it in the same way as you would treat your own hair. Washing your hair will depend upon the type of extensions that you have so let’s take a look below:
1 - Halo hair and clip in extensions must always be removed before washing! Make sure that there are no tangles or knots as these will only become worse after washing. In a sink run warm water (not too hot) and gentle shampoo and rinse them, always lather in a downwards motion to prevent breakage. Once you have thoroughly rinsed off the shampoo you can repeat this process with the conditioner. Gently remove all excess water with a towel, again just squeezing the hair with the towel and running it in a downwards motion. You can then lay the hair on a towel and leave to air dry. Once the hair has dried you can gently brush it to remove any tangles and style how you wish.
2 - Tape Ins, hand sewn wefts and I-tips extensions are all attached to your natural hair so you can wash them in a similar way to how you would wash your own hair. Just be sure to always lather and rinse in a downwards motion to protect your hair from breaking and prevent tangling. If you have tape-ins then do not get any conditioner near the tapes as this will loosen the sticky bond and the extensions could slip out.
